How likely is it that my headaches are coming from my neck (are mechanical)?

  •  Does your headache change location? For example, is it sometimes left sided and other times on the right, or sometimes at the front and other times more towards the back or side of your head?
  •  Do you ever get neck pain or tightness?
  •  Do you ever have any restriction in your neck movement?
  •  Do you ever get neck pain, tightness or stiffness and a headache at the same time?
  •  Does your headache ever come on if you haven’t moved your head and neck for a while eg sitting at a computer / watching tv / using your phone?
  •  Does your headache ever feel better (even slightly decrease) when you move, stretch or massage your neck?

If you answered 'yes' to 2 or more questions, there is a good chance you can benefit from a mechanical assessment by an MDT-trained physiotherapist.

How likely is it that my neck pain is mechanical?

  •  Are you generally worse when sitting for prolonged periods, or on rising from the sitting position?
  •  Are you generally worse when inactive and better when on the move?
  •  Do you sometimes experience pain across the shoulders or into the shoulder blades?
  •  Do you sometimes experience pain down the arm and into the hand with symptoms like the feeling of “pins and needles” or numbness in the fingers?
  •  If you have pain in between or around your shoulder blades, does it sometimes stop completely, even though you may still have pain in the neck?

If you answered 'yes' to 2 or more questions, there is a good chance you can benefit from a mechanical assessment by an MDT-trained physiotherapist.

How likely is it that my back pain is mechanical?

  •  Are you generally worse when sitting for prolonged periods or upon rising from the sitting position?
  •  Is your back pain aggravated by activities that involve prolonged bending or stooping as in bed-making, vacuuming, ironing, concreting, digging or gardening, and sometimes the symptoms can be even more severe the day after the activity?
  •  Are you generally worse when getting up in the morning, but improve after about half an hour?
  •  Are you generally worse when inactive and better when on the move?
  •  Are you generally better when walking?
  •  If you have pain in the buttocks or upper/lower leg, does it sometimes stop completely, even though you may still have back pain?

If you answered 'yes' to 2 or more questions, there is a good chance you can benefit from a mechanical assessment by an MDT-trained physiotherapist.

How likely is it that my upper limb pain is mechanical?

(could be: shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, finger)

  •  Is the location of your pain not always in the exact same location?
  •  When you have pain, do you feel like you lose your usual range of movement?
  •  Do you sometimes get pain in your neck, or between your shoulder blades?
  •  Do you sometimes get pain above and/or the affected joint? (for example, shoulder pain that runs into the arm and/or neck)
  •  Do you only get pain when you move your arm or the affected joint?
  •  Are you worse when you repeatedly use your arm or affected joint?
  •  Do you have periods in the day when you have no pain at all?

If you answered 'yes' to 2 or more questions, there is a good chance you can benefit from a mechanical assessment by an MDT-trained physiotherapist.

How likely is it that my lower limb pain is mechanical?

(could be: hip, knee, ankle, foot, toe)

  •  Is the location of your pain not always in the exact same location?
  •  Does the frequency and intensity of your pain change on a day-to-day basis?
  •  Does walking up or down stairs/hills produce or increase pain?
  •  Does sitting for an extended period make your lower limb pain worse?
  •  Does your lower limb pain decrease when you're moving?
  •  Does your pain intensity vary, with some days being better than others?
  •  When you have pain, does it feel like you lose your usual range of movement?
